GameJam Day 1: Back in the saddle

Not much for the first day, but not bad progress.

I’ve defined what I want the game to be about:

You must mix drinks for the people who are waiting at death’s door.

And how the main mechanic will work:

Match the patterns that patrons ask for. Fail too many times and you lose.

For a more detailed explanation, I’ll try and keep an up-to-date micro GDD here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1eA5n2M4V0dM8hs4TZIoVFY35_gTgnk_UKYKbG3BMciM/edit#heading=h.voak8wc7rq9e

As far as other work, I created the itch.io project page just so I can start getting familiar with the interface. For the logo I just used Canva(https://www.canva.com/), it’s a good tool for creating quick art assets, and all the art in it is free to use for non-commercial use I believe.

The next big job is to create the art assets(never a bad idea honestly, they drive a lot of the stuff after)

Since I’m not really an artist, I’m going to go with a simple flat 2D style made using Inkscape, for those of us who are graphically challenged Inkscape is great because it requires a lot less understanding of art principles to make something at least passable.

Here’s a screenshot of the main character and client NPC art. I’m trying to go for an Art Deco style. Something that I’d like to point out is that you can see image references in the screenshot, I’d like to underline that it’s perfectly ok to use reference images when working and that every single artist I’ve talked to uses reference images.

Draft

Tomorrow, I’d like to at least finish all the art and start coding.

One last tip before I go. When you’re searching for reference images and pinterest is getting your way, don’t forget that you can remove Pinterest results by adding -site:pinterest.* to the end of your Google query.
